On February 10, 7:30 p.m., Park ICM presented a repeat broadcast of the Side-By-Side Concert with Cello Studio Professor Daniel Veis, Viola Studio Peter Chun, and Violin Studio Professor Ben Sayevich alongside their respective protegés. Performed in the 1900 Bld., pieces performed were:
Brahms: String Sextet No. 2 in G major, Opus 36
Composed during the years of 1864-1965 at the age of 31,
Johannes Brahms apparently found the lush country surroundings of Lichtental near Baden-Baden inspiring. String Sextet No. 2 in G major, Opus 36 has an “exotic sounding opening” and is one of the rare compositions written specifically for two violins, two violas and two cellos.

Paired with the Brahms is Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings in E flat major, Op.20 written for 4 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos. Composed in 1825 when the composer was a mere 16 years old, the piece is said to have “remarkable fluidity” in its melodies and a “delicate balance of its various parts.”
